PREFACE
The exhibition of “Images and Words” focuses on a special subject in the modern and contemporary time, also the relationship between words (including writings) and plastic art (including its development veins) established by the artists. The attention for this subject can be traced back to December 1929; the illustrations, paintings, and the article “Words and Images” still passes on and continues its influence to this day. We can find certain traces in the forefront of the modern art exploration.
In this exhibition, we will review the different art schools and trends rooted in Wallon-Brussel region. Among different art schools and trends, what intersected are the formative and literature thinking, the attention to the signified and interpretation to the signifier, the visual poetry and the theorized picture, the language and art, text and situation.
From Magritte, from surrealism to the Cobra group, from Broodthaers to the creation of concept art and mixed media, we can see the rich possibilities contained in the course of meaning presented by the artists. This richness reflects on the unending tension between images and words, forms and thinking, writings and art trends, poetic language and its forms, has been extended to the contemporary art creations and will get much richer.
