He was born in Leizhou, Guangdong Province in 1975 and graduated with a master degree from the Oil Painting Department, Guangzhou College of Fine Arts in 2008.

PREFACE

One hundred Van Gogh are also one hundred Chen Yu

All encounters stem from a deadly attraction. That an artist chooses another artist’s portrait as a creative object must also stem from a mutual call. We also see the face of the artist Chen Yu from this group of Van Gogh's ink portraits, in which the happiness and hardship, despair and affection do not have the difference between Ancient and Contemporary, China and foreign countries, even ink and oil paintings.

"A thousand readers have a thousand Hamlet." A hundred portraits of Van Gogh is also a hundred of

Chen Yu, a hundred moments or a hundred sides in which reflected each of us. All masterpieces are such mirrors, from which we can see ourselves when we stand in front of them. 

I am two years older than Chen Yu, so I can say that we are the same generation. We have a similar path of art or writing: starting with Western philosophy, poetry and art. The process of our continuous exploration is precisely the process by which tradition wakes up in our bodies, that is also the process by which landscape painters of generation wakes up in our writings.

I think that the attraction and resonance of Chen Yu’s work brings me, is not only a kind of similar growth experience between us, but also the insidious virus spread in all of our lives，the moment when the humanity is re-illuminated in such viewing and reading.

In Chen Yu's extremely modern inks, I saw an increasingly strong orientality, a space that reappears after time has been added. Or, poetry is precisely the world that we have seen again after the time dimension is added. This is also the reason why Picasso said that the real art is in the East and in China.

This is also the reason why I regard Chen Yu as a poet: a poet holding a brush, a painter who uses a pen and ink line to outline the subtle but the vast universe, a person who constantly triumphs in failure, a witness who experiences happiness, hardship, despair, and affection in the human world.

Perhaps we must also complete one such testimony: all greatness is unfinished. I would like to share this with Chen Yu and bless him.
